Castle in the Sky has many of the themes, animation techniques and story tropes that can be found in many of Miyazaki’s movies. And so now, looking at Castle in the Sky represents to me the formalized structure of Miyazaki’s film making style, solidifying many of the choices that typify his movies. As I mentioned in the previous entries in this series, Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro was a primordial Miyazaki that does not really have much in common with the rest of the movies I have covered or will cover, while Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is then the nascent form of Miyazaki’s style. However, this film still offers a fascinating window into the early career of the director. Being the third film with Miyazaki as a director and the first produced by Studio Ghibli after it was founded, this movie arrived right before Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli exploded in popularity, fame and recognition worldwide. The next stop on our journey through Miyazaki’s career is Castle in the Sky (1986).
